Not exactly a new kid on the block, CedarCreek Estate Winery has undergone some exciting changes the past year, with a brand, modern tasting room and restaurant. Learn about the fascinating history of this beautiful winery that overlooks Okanagan Lake and be sure to sip on some of its most excellent vintages by booking our Lakeshore Fab 5 Kelowna wine tasting tour.
From the Okanagan to Ottawa and Back
Before it was purchased in 2014 by the von Mandl family of Mission Creek Estate Winery fame, CedarCreek was the vision of Kelowna businessman and Canadian Senator, Ross Fitzpatrick.
Sen. Fitzpatrick was born to an agricultural family in the Okanagan and worked with his father at a fruit packing and shipping company early in his career.
After spending years in Ottawa and having a successful business career in the aerospace, oil & gas, and mining industries, Sen. Fitzpatrick returned to the Okanagan and purchased the land that would become CedarCreek Estate Winery in 1986.
The Wine
Known as one of the first wineries in the Okanagan to grow Vitis vinifera or European grape varieties, CedarCreek has been twice named Winery of the Year at the Canadian Wine Awards/National Wine Awards of Canada.
The magic happens at CedarCreek’s 50-acre on-site Home Block Vineyard, initially planted in the 1930s, which features organically farmed Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, and Riesling grapes. Most of the winery’s reds, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Syrah, are grown at the winery’s Desert Ridge and Haynes Creek vineyards in Osoyoos,
Sip for yourself by sampling both CedarCreek’s estate and platinum reds and whites, as well as pinot noir rosé, sparkling brut, and when available, their Platinum M fortified wine and Riesling ice wine.
The Winery Today
While Senator Fitzpatrick’s vision has remained intact, a lot has happened at CedarCreek since the winery transferred to the von Mandls.
One of the most significant changes has been the addition of three new buildings to the site.
This includes the newly opened wine tasting room, which offers several levels of wine tastings from its modern space with sweeping views of Okanagan Lake and the surrounding vineyard.
Also making waves is the Home Block Restaurant, which opened in June 2019. Crafted from fieldstone and 100-year-old reclaimed barn wood, the restaurant has just been nominated as one of Canada’s Best Restaurants 2019 by Air Canada’s enRoute Magazine.
The third building, which will be open to club members, will offer VIP tastings and be used for special events. It is expected to open in the spring of 2020.
